In the great hall of the palace of the kings of Brittany, old King Lear gathers his daughters, their husbands and his faithful friend the Earl of Kent. He announces his desire to retire from power and his decision to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, Goneril married to the Duke of Albany, Regane wife of Cornwall and Cordelia, the youngest, courted by the Duke of Burgundy and the King of France.
The largest share will be offered to the one who can declare that she loves him best. While the two eldest don't hesitate to play the sycophancy card, Cordélia is sober and sincere, declaring that she will one day owe half her affection to a future husband, even though she loves her father deeply. Hurt by this reserve, which stings his pride all the more because it comes from his favorite child, Lear disinherits Cordélia.
Long considered dark, exploring the depths of human suffering and despair, the theatrical representation of King Lear has strongly influenced modern drama.
