À propos
This show is based on the life and work of Philippe Astley, inventor of the modern equestrian circus.
It pays tribute to live performance, to horses and to artists.
The extraordinary story of this new form of entertainment and its pioneering riders is told in the course of these tableaux.
Instead of a prologue, the show opens with a succession of scenes illustrating how this English horseman, who found himself at a loss at the end of the war, transformed what he had imagined as a training and demonstration arena for cavalry at military exercises, into a theatrical stage.
It was at the end of the 18th century, when a return to peace breathed new life into the people, and a considerable craze for all forms of entertainment, that Astley set about creating an original show. He brought together in one place the equestrian art of the high military school and the knights, as well as the fairground arts hitherto perpetrated at fairs.
And without realizing it, he laid the foundations for what was to become the modern circus.
Over and above the original performances, led by some of the most talented artists and supported by an aesthetically polished staging that is at times poetic and at times humorous, in a fictionalized way we witness the birth of the emblematic figures who have been the success and identity of the circus for 250 years.
> Reservations strongly recommended on the Haras national du Pin website.
> Performances from April 4 to June 28, at 3pm weekdays and 4pm weekends and public holidays.
