La tête de la Biche is a mountain peak in the Madeleine Massif at 647 m altitude, made up of intermediate Buntsandstein sandstone. Formerly a stubble pasture, the site features many remarkable rock outcrops, including the Bihay rocks and the Roche de la Biche. Its name is thought to derive from the Old French bisse (cattle) or from the Latin bestia, recalling its ancient pastoral use. The area also boasts archaeological remains testifying to ancient occupation.
Today, the tête de la Biche is an important landscape and meteorological landmark: its darkening, visible from the surrounding valleys and Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, generally heralds the arrival of precipitation or bad weather.
