La vallée de la Traire

📍 Nogent, Haute-Marne · 52800 Nogent
La vallée de la Traire
À propos
The river we're following is called the Traire. It rises at the Mediterranean-Manche watershed. It's a verdant valley, ideal for livestock farming. Its piscicultural qualities are appreciated by fishermen. Upstream, Nogentais learned to swim here, and water sports festivals were held until the first half of the 20th century.
A water retention system can also be seen, which fed an underground aqueduct to the cutlery factory located in the former priory. This system demonstrates the importance of hydraulic power in the industrialization of the Nogent basin during the 19th century. Water was either used to power machines directly, via a waterwheel, or to generate electricity, via a dynamo or turbine.
