À propos
In 1853, Jean Dollfus founded the SOMCO, which immediately began the construction of workers' housing between the discharge canal and the Avenue de Colmar. From 1856, the city extends on the other side of the canal, towards the DMC factory. It consists of three types of houses: strip houses according to the English model, either back to back with a front garden, or between courtyard and garden, "carré mulhousien" invented by the SOMCO, a house divided into four with independent entrances and small garden. 1243 houses will be built, with one innovation: the possibility of home ownership.
