Ecole maternelle Jacques Prévert

Doctor Penot's speech in 1828 on the necessity to educate children under 6 years old, provoked the opening of asylum rooms, ancestors of nursery schools. The one in the rue de Pfastatt was the first to be created in 1834, on private initiative, by the wives of André and Nicolas Koechlin. It is the first example in the department. Two rooms welcomed 150 children, whose mothers could then go to work. The asylum was very successful (453 children attended in 1896, 561 in 1906). The city became the owner in 1861. The building was not open to visitors.
