Established in 1890 on the premises of the Institut des Sciences de la Terre, at the heart of the campus of the former imperial university built under Wilhelm II, the Museum is one of the most important in the province in terms of the richness of its collections (around 30,000 minerals). Its role has been primarily associated with scientific research and the training of mineralogists...
The collection originated in the natural history cabinet of a Strasbourg professor of medicine. After his death in 1800, the City transformed it into a Museum, before dissolving it in 1880 in favor of the scientific collections of the new University.
