À propos
The building was designed by Alexandre Stamm (1835-1906), Sélestat?s town architect since 1874. The synagogue was inaugurated on September 3, 1890.
The synagogue has a centered plan in the style of Rhenish synagogues, and is decorated in a sober neo-Romanesque style. Alternating yellow sandstone and red brick courses, as well as pink sandstone quoins and surrounds, give it a colorful appearance.
Damaged by the Nazis in 1940, the synagogue was restored to its original dome after the war. It was on this occasion that the old ritual bath (Mikvé) dating from 1836 was uncovered.
