Château de Marlenheim

The castle of Marlenheim was the property of the abbey of Andlau in the 14th century. It became the property of the city of Strasbourg in the 16th century. The foundations of the building are under the ground of the courtyard and the present castle was built in the 18th century and bears the coat of arms of the city. It must have served as a residence for the bailiff. After the Revolution, it passed through the hands of various owners and the bishop of Strasbourg installed the small Sorbonne in the outbuildings in order to complete the education of the best students of the seminary. Nowadays, the building is owned by the sisters of Ribeauvillé who use it as a retirement home. The buildings are U-shaped and open onto the courtyard. The school, nicknamed the Little Sorbonne, closed its doors in 1842 after the death of Mgr Le Pape de Trévern, and was taken over in 1916 by the sisters of Ribeauvillé.
