Nocturne à Saint-Etienne : visite guidée en soirée de l'église Saint-Etienne de Nevers

Tonight, the church of Saint-Etienne reveals itself in a visit like no other. At the heart of the Saint-Etienne district, where some of Nevers' finest town houses can still be found, the church was the centre of an independent Frankish town in the 11th century. A remarkable example of Romanesque architecture, its three-storey structure culminates at 18 metres under a barrel vault, and represents a feat of engineering that would remain unequalled until the Gothic period. Its value is also measured by the link it maintained with the great abbey of Cluny, founded in 910, and its European network of monasteries and outbuildings. Between the 10th and 12th centuries in particular, Cluny played a key role in the development of medieval society, not only in religious, cultural and artistic terms, but also in social and political terms.
