ABBAYE DE LAGRASSE
À propos
Imposing and majestic in its green setting, the abbey was founded under Charlemagne in 779. It was the largest abbey in the département and has since become one of its finest architectural treasures. Facing the medieval town, listed as one of "France's most beautiful villages", this imposing Benedictine monument commands respect and presents a breathtaking catalog of architecture from the 8th to the 18th century.
You'll discover the essentially medieval buildings: the courtyard of the abbey dwelling, the storeroom, the chapels and their vestibules, the sacristy, the north transept, the pre-Romanesque tower, the lapidary repository, the ceremonial hall and the dormitory, partly restored in 2009.
the aim of "L'abbaye médiévale de Lagrasse, center culturel Les arts de lire" is to identify the abbey with the world of the written word and the debate of ideas, while continuing the process of enhancing the monument's heritage.
In this lively venue, visitors will be able to discover the abbey, as well as attend meetings and study sessions on books, debates and images.
A bookshop and store are also fully integrated into the space. A literary café is open from May to September.
Group bookings only.
