À propos
At Bellicourt, the British monument on the Pont de Riqueval recalls the events of 29 September 1918, the day on which the 46th British Division (North Midlands) attacked the Hindenburg Line.
The assault on the Siegfried position enabled a company of the 6th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment (137th Brigade) and a detachment of Royal Engineers to seize the Riqueval Bridge (the last intact bridge over the Saint-Quentin canal), a key point in the German defences.
This would lead to the final phase of the victorious Allied offensive which would end with the signing of the armistice on November 11, 1918.
This stele was placed on 29 September 2018 and was commemorated on 29 and 30 September 2018. It replaces a first stele which was placed on the 75th anniversary in 1993.
