At Bellicourt, the American memorial is dedicated to the American units that fought alongside the British armies in France. The 27th and 30th Divisions arrived in the area after fighting in Belgium in September 1918.
These divisions joined the Hindenburg Line on 24-25 September 1918 under the tactical command of the Australian Army. American troops took part in the Allied offensive which began on 29 September 1918.
The fighting was so deadly that these divisions were relieved the next day, 30 September 1918.
This memorial thus pays tribute to the 90,000 American soldiers engaged in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line.
