A fiery encounter between materials, cultures and people

As part of an unprecedented transatlantic collaboration, Brazilian designers Nicole Tomazi and Sergio Cabral have joined forces with the Centre International d?Art Verrier to celebrate the marriage of two traditional skills specific to their respective home countries: on the one hand, the Brazilian tradition of weaving plant fibers, and on the other, French glassmaking techniques, recently elevated to the rank of Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

TomaziCabral invited Meisenthal?s glassmakers to blow molten glass into baskets and baskets from different natural environments, collected from Brazil?s 27 regions. Subjected to a fleeting trial by fire, each basket ignites, burns and sometimes disappears. But glass neither forgets nor repents. It retains, imprinted in its flesh, the imprints of its plant matrix, as well as the memory of the gestures of the Brazilian and French craftsmen who brought them into the world.

Impression, a collection of 27 glass ghost-pieces, illustrates the position of creative communities around the world who campaign for the transmission, preservation and re-cultivation of indigenous craft skills.
