À propos
In the Middle Ages, the town of Wasselonne was defended by a castle built on the hill overlooking the town. All that remains today of this castle is the entrance gate surmounted by a square tower, the former residence of the bailiff, a few sections of the surrounding walls and a round tower

This gate, flanked by 2 round turrets, was raised by a square tower in 1789, in order to replace the watchtower in the center of the castle, which was destroyed in 1674. The lower part of the castle contained the guard's quarters and cells for prisoners

This tower can only be seen from the outside (unless you ask for a guided tour at the Tourist Office) or during the summer

The defense of the castle included numerous loopholes and machicolations. A loophole above the vault of the entrance door is closed by a cylindrical ashlar that can be easily rotated. Underneath, there is a frame with the Lord's coat of arms, which was hammered out during the revolution

The square tower houses a clock mechanism dating from 1881 and a large bell installed in 1818
