À propos
It was around 1870 that the Jewish community of Wasselonne was formed, with the majority of families coming from villages in the region with large Jewish communities. At the beginning, services were held in private houses, then in 1890 a first oratory was created in the building that housed the Caisse d'Epargne. Many Jews left the village after the First World War, but a large part of the community of Wintzenheim-Kochersberg came to Wasselonne. A new oratory was built in 1924 because the old one had become too small due to the growth of the community, in a building in the castle courtyard, which has now disappeared. After the Second World War, some families revived the community. Finally, a synagogue was built in 1959-1960. It was built on a piece of land made available by the city, rue de la poste. It is modern and sober in style, and its main ornament is a magnificent stained glass window covering the north façade. Nowadays, the synagogue is only used occasionally due to the decrease of the community.
