Mont Scharrach

Rising to an altitude of 316 meters, Mont Scharrach rises above the vineyards and offers a panoramic view of the Vosges and the Black Forest. It is listed in the National Natural Heritage Inventory.


The Scharrachberg hill is located at the eastern edge of the Saverne fault zone. The grassland on the southwest slope is a sensitive natural site.
The Scharrachberg is a limestone hill, topped with a canopy of Austrian black pines. Toward the southwest, in the spring, one can observe pulsatilla anemones, also known as pasque flowers, Zutterroose, or Kuhschelle—deep purple flowers with numerous yellow stamens. In June, you can find orchids with long spikes of pale pink flowers. This flora deserves to be protected.
The Scharrachberg, often referred to as Mont Scharrach, is part of the Sub-Vosges hills—those rounded peaks reaching altitudes between 300 m and 400 m to the east of the Vosges. Like its neighbors the Stephansberg (373 m), the Marlenberg (369 m), the Goeftberg (397 m), the Jesselsberg, and to the north the Bastberg (326 m), the Scharrach is composed of Muschelkalk limestone.
It benefits from a mild microclimate characteristic of the warm, dry, and sunny limestone environments typical of the hills. With its distinctive vegetation, particularly its tall pine trees, it reminds me of a Mediterranean landscape. On its dry grasslands, one finds countless rare, threatened, or endangered plants.
The platform on the Scharrachberg features numerous bunkers and tunnels of German origin dating from before World War I.
