New York, 2022. The megalopolis is overpopulated. Water is scarce. The fauna and flora have almost disappeared. Agricultural food is also almost extinct. Most of the inhabitants cannot afford to buy natural food, the prices being exorbitant. The industrialization of the planet started in the 19th century and amplified during the 20th and 21st centuries has led to the depletion of natural resources worldwide. The population is fed by Soylent Industries, a manufacturer of synthetic foods that take the form of square coloured tablets. The launch of a new, much more nutritious food, Soylent Green, provokes riots by starving citizens... But the murder of one of the multinational company's executives prompts Detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) to investigate the food company.
