"Tous les Matins du Monde is a novel written by Pascal Quignard and published in 1991.

An imaginary biography of a real historical musician of the 17th century, Jean de Sainte-Colombe and his pupil Marin Marais, better known than his master. Bass viol music, highly prized during the "Grand Siècle", plays a key role.

Reading: Extracts from the novel Tous les Matins du Monde

Music: Les Voix Humaines by Marais, La Biscayenne by Sainte-Colombe, La Rêveuse by Marais, Chaconne La Buisson by Forqueray, La Polonoise by Marais, La Guitare by Marais, etc

Summary: In the spring of 1650, Madame de Sainte-Colombe died, leaving her husband alone with their two young daughters, Madeleine and Toinette. To augment their income, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe gives viola da gamba lessons. He immerses himself in music to forget the death of his wife. Working alone in a hut, he perfected his instrument to the point where he could "imitate all the inflections of the human voice".
