La Sinne

The street is located on the southernmost arm of the Ill. Together with the three other canals, the Sinne, was used to contain the floods of the Ill as well as to protect the city. The rise of Mulhouse in the 19th century led to the covering of the canals. The Sinne canal was covered between 1859 and 1866, thus making it possible to link the Porte du Miroir to the Porte de Bâle and to ensure the development of an entire district. The ditch owes its name to the German word "Sinne", "gauge", and reminds us that gauges installed behind the town hall determined the capacity of the barrels with the water from the ditch.
