The first bishop of Paris, Saint-Denis, was beheaded after being spotted by a Roman governor. Legend has it that he walked six kilometers carrying his head in his hands.
The church dedicated to him in Polisot boasts a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance portal, depicting a bound Christ flanked by Saint-Edme and Saint-Syre.
Each stands beneath a canopy of stone lace.
Inside, a triptych on canvas shows Jesus accompanied by Saint-Roch, Saint-Denis, John and Madeleine. There's also a panel depicting the sacrifice of Abraham and a fine 16th-century stone statue of St. John the Baptist.
Some traces of polychromy remain in the nave. A pupil of Ingres, Claudius Lavergne, created the stained-glass windows in 1886.
A particular feature of the church is the two-meter difference in level between the nave vault and the side aisles.
This style of three-vessel church is known in Champagne as a "hall church".
It was listed on the Inventaire des Monuments Historiques on July 28, 1936.
