Ancienne usine textile Varinet

The Espérance textile mill, founded by Jules Varinet in 1872 in Gaulier, became a limited company in 1900 and suffered damage during the First World War. In 1930, Henrion took over management, before the Laurant brothers' SATA took over after 1940. The plant ceased operations in 1980. The northern workshops probably date from the late 19th century, while the eastern workshops and machine room date from after 1918. Owned by the municipality until 2004, the site has since been occupied by the Raguet sawmill. In 1909, 500 workers produced up to 15,000 m² of fabric per day. Rectangular in shape and bordered on the south by the Meuse River, the mill has fuel docks. In the southeast corner, the reinforced concrete power plant and boiler house mark the entrance. A brick chimney survives, opposite limestone rubble offices. The reinforced concrete workshops feature a skylight, while those to the north, in rubble stone, have metal frames on cast-iron posts. The stores are plastered and covered with long-sloped roofs.
