At first, a chapel was founded in 1438 on this place, when it was depending of La Chapelle d'Abondance. Châtel became a parish in 1643. A parish church was built in 1662, and was extended in 1848 so as to be large enough for the population and the first tourists.

Christmas Mass: December 24 at 7:30pm.
December 28, 2025 to February 22, 2026: Sundays at 5:30pm.
Saturday, February 28 and March 7, 2026 at 6pm.
Also note the blessing of skiers on February 17 and the mass of ashes on the 18th celebrated in the Plaine Dranse chapel.
