The Maison de la Laine et du Drap at 77 rue Trivalle in Carcassonne presents the great epic of the Carcassonne cloth industry.
The creation of a woollen cloth requires several stages, each of which will be presented one by one in the Maison de la Laine et du Drap. These stages, each as important as the next, required artisan know-how and special tools.
First, the merino sheep and its wool will be presented, followed by the sorting and washing of this same wool. Next, carding and spinning will be demonstrated using historic tools. Then, warping and weaving on a loom to understand this incredible technique that has existed since Neolithic times. Next, the trade of pareur will be explained, and finally, the dyeing process will be discussed, with particular emphasis on the importance of Carcassonne blues.
The final stop at the Maison de la Laine et du Drap (Wool and Cloth House) focuses on the Merchants-Fabricants, the great orchestrators of this industry in the town, and the former Manufacture Royale de la Trivalle. Its magnificent facade, visible at the end of the Pont-Vieux, is a reminder of a history that was so important to Carcassonne.
