Collégiale Sainte-Croix
À propos
A superb Romanesque building built in the 11th century, the Sainte-Croix collegiate church was the site of exorcism sessions during the trial of Urbain Grandier in 1634. This priest accused of witchcraft by nuns was the main protagonist of the "affair of the possessed of Loudun". At the end of the 19th century, the church was transformed into a covered market until 1991. Today, it is one of the major monuments of Loudun's heritage with its exceptional painted decorations from the 12th and late 13th centuries. Since its restoration in 1995, it has been used as a showcase for numerous art exhibitions.
