Monet, Peindre le Temps

2026 marks the centenary of the death of painter Claude Monet (1840-1926). To mark this anniversary, the Musée de l'Orangerie is organizing an exhibition focusing on Monet?s relationship with time. From the 1870s onwards, Monet was considered the Impressionist artist par excellence. His work quickly came to be confused with the "new painting", so much so does it encapsulate its characteristics (executed mostly en plein air, with rapid brushstrokes revealing the impression of an instant) In the 1890s, with series such as Les cathédrales, Les meules and Les peupliers, the painter revealed an approach akin to the dissection of time, culminating in the final testament of Les Nymphéas.
