Once the palace of the kings of France, the Louvre became a museum in 1793. Its prestigious collections span millennia and an immense territory. Eight departments, from Egyptian Antiquities to Byzantine Art, Paintings, Sculptures and Islamic Art, present nearly 33,000 exceptional works. A ninth department, Arts of Byzantium and Eastern Christianity, will enrich this cultural nugget by 2025.
