Crypte du martyrium

In the 5th century, the inhabitants of Paris built a chapel on the Butte in honor of Saint Denis, the city's first bishop. Rebuilt in the 9th century to accommodate pilgrims, this chapel bears witness to local Christian history. Archaeological digs on the hilltop have uncovered numerous Christian burials grouped together in a quarry known as Martyrium. These discoveries reveal a rich and moving history.
