La Roche du Sapin Sec, a Vosges sandstone peak rising to 872 m, takes its name from a dead fir tree visible until the early 20th century. Also known as the "Devil's Chair", it is associated with a witchcraft myth in which the fir tree, sacred then cursed, hosted a devil's sabbath. In 1905, a military observatory was installed here, which was used during the First World War and remained in place until the 1920s. The face of the rock is approximately 10 metres at the base and 7 to 8 metres high, adding to its imposing appearance.
It offers panoramic views: to the east, the Vosges crest as far as the Hohneck; to the west, the Lorraine hills and, in fine weather, as far as Nancy; to the north, the Hautes-Chaumes de Moussey; to the south, the Kemberg, Sérichamp and the Gérardmer mountains. An orientation table, set up by the Hautes-Vosges section of the C.A.F., is located at the summit.
