La Chaise du Roi is a rocky site located at an altitude of 540 m in the Madeleine massif, within the Saint-Dié-des-Vosges municipal forest. It was the site of the Château de Clermont (or Chaumont), founded in the 10th century by the Abbey of Saint-Dié, then rebuilt in 1205 by Mathieu de Lorraine. The castle soon became a den of banditry, and was besieged and destroyed by Duke Thiebaud I of Lorraine, never to be rebuilt. Today, all that remains of the castle are the moats and rare remains. The rock also offers a remarkable panorama of the Taintroué valley and surrounding mountains.
