Maison romaine

À propos
A replica of a villa unearthed in Pompeii, the Roman House adjoins the banks of the Moselle. A Spinalienne by adoption (and by heart!), I especially enjoy strolling along the fragrant paths of this magnificent rose garden from May onwards.

In Epinal, green spaces are an integral part of the town! The "Jardin à la Française"-style rose garden charms me with its 500 varieties of roses, carefully tended by the town's gardeners. In the heart of this fragrant, colorful park, I step back in time to 1892, when Madame Morel Leclerc, heiress to a flour mill transformed into a pasta factory, decided to build the Villa. Architect Boussard, aware that the Vosges climate was a tad chillier than Italy's, made a few adaptations, such as corner chimneys for underfloor heating... He also created an entrance hall comprising two covered atriums, each with an impluvium. It is said that Mme Morel, draped in a toga, gave sumptuous receptions here, served by dwarfs! But the ruined owner abandoned her antique reveries! The town acquired the unfinished property in 1902 to house its library, and completed construction of the winter garden. Today, the building is home to a number of Pôle Images companies.
