La Roche du Sphinx is a natural site located at an altitude of around 560 metres, on a mound overlooking the small town of Anould and the Meurthe valley. Its name derives from the shape of the rock, which once, seen from a distance, evoked a human head, and, at a greater distance, a stone colossus. The site is covered with heather and scattered boulders, and the rock itself is fine-grained feldspathic granite.
