A leading figure in the Viennese and international feminist avant-garde, Birgit Jørgensen (1949–2003) participated in major exhibitions beginning in 1975. With irony, she deconstructs the prejudices and stereotypes assigned to women through drawings, photographs, objects, and performances, often using her own body. Influenced by psychoanalysis and surrealism, her work questions gender norms.Iconic pieces, such as the “cook’s apron” or her “fetish shoes,” blend poetry, humor, and social criticism.
