À propos
On the edge of Lorraine, nestling in the arms of its monumental citadel, lies the fortified town of Bitche. The fortified town of Bitche was born of the strategic nature of the rocky outcrop above it, which has been covered by defensive works since the 12th century. Bitche is steeped in an extraordinary history, with events that have both rocked and bruised it.
The citadel, whose sharp features soar above the town?s rooftops, seems to defy the onslaught of time and oblivion. It stands as a guardian of memory, reminding our contemporaries that it owes its proud appearance to the genius of Vauban and that, since it stood in the 17th century, it has never succumbed to the charges of its offenders.
The history of the citadel is masterfully laid out for you in the heart of its underground entrenchments and barracks. You can relive the terrible siege of 1870 in a unique audiovisual animation, and virtually walk through a relief plan dating back to 1794. A museum and a series of panels complete the historical and functional panorama of the site.
