The Grossmann is the largest biological reserve in Lorraine, created in 1984 with the aim of preserving the capercaillie's habitat. From 173 hectares at the beginning, it was enlarged in 1990 to 1,568 hectares, straddling the state forests of Abreschviller and Walscheid.
