Porte Chatel

It is the oldest gate of the city. Built in the 12th century, the Châtel gate is part of the ancient ramparts that encircled the upper town. It controlled access to the city from Mount Saint-Vanne, on which stood the famous Benedictine abbey of Saint-Vanne.
Elements of the medieval defensive fortification such as machicolations and loopholes are still visible on this gate and on a section of the rampart.
