SAINT-MICHEL

A village associated with the commune of Villegusien-le-Lac, Saint-Michel's history is linked to that of Emmanuel de Grouchy (1882-1950). Born in Calvados, he had a brilliant military career and distinguished himself in WW1. Settling in Saint-Michel in 1941, he took command of the Resistance in Haute-Marne in 1943 under the name "Colonel Michel". His effectiveness against the occupying forces earned him promotion to Grand Officier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1950.
