À propos
In the summer of 1544, the armies of Emperor Charles V, at war with King Francis I, invaded Saint-Dizier, a border town of the Kingdom of France

Nearly 42,000 soldiers faced the city's troops and inhabitants, barely 4,500 men, women and children. The assault was repelled for more than a month and allowed France to recover and save Paris
François I, in recognition of the city, allowed it to bear its own arms with the motto "Regnum Sustinent" ("they support the kingdom").

Inaugurated on September 17, 1905 in the presence of several ministers, this bronze work commemorates the resistance of the inhabitants against the imperial armies of Charles V during the summer of 1544
It was created by the sculptor René-Philéas Carillon and the architect Émile Ferrant, following a public subscription, and then cast by the foundry Capitain-Geny, today Ferry Capitain in Vecqueville (52)

It was on this occasion that the city of Saint-Dizier was awarded the cross of the Legion of Honor in memory of the heroic siege.
