Haute-Marne is one of the most densely wooded departments on the plains. Forests cover 250,000 ha (40% of the department's surface area). Public forests are in the majority. Private forests account for only 46% of the total forest area.
The limestone plateaux occupy the entire central part of the département. Forests are very present and diversified. Beech dominates, accompanied by many other species: oak, hornbeam, maple, lime, fruit trees...
In the south-east of the département, the Bassigny region features oak-beech forests. Hornbeam and ash are fairly common. In the north of the département, the wet Champagne region (Der) is dominated by oak stands, with a mixture of various hardwood species (hornbeam, beech, ash, precious hardwoods, etc.).
