Les Halles de Chaumont

The Baltard-style halls are typical of the period: the use of a new material, cast iron, enabled large spans and the construction of vast, largely glazed buildings. This building occupies the site of a former corn market, itself built on the site of Saint-Michel church (1500-1800). Saint-Michel church was 31 m long and had three naves. Nearby were the first cemetery and the Hôtel-Dieu, the town?s first hospital, demolished in 1765. During the French Revolution, the church was used as a prisoner shelter, and later as a military storehouse. In 1800, the government ceded it to the town, which razed it to the ground.

Visible from the street, you can enter the church on Saturday mornings during the market.
