MARMESSE

📍 Châteauvillain, Haute-Marne · 52120 Châteauvillain
À propos
Thanks to its location on the banks of the Aujon and close to the Boulaumont hill, Marmesse occupies a privileged position that has allowed it to be inhabited since ancient times.

Various discoveries prove this hypothesis: arrowheads and flint at Boulaumont, Etruscan breastplates in the ponds, Merovingian sarcophagi, coins and pottery unearthed during excavations or construction work.

For several decades, the Aujon alluvial plain was used as a quarry for ballast extraction, which considerably altered the landscape, creating 35 ponds, known as sablières. Today, these ponds are used for fishing and leisure activities. Ducks and swans make their home here, and migratory birds stop off to enjoy the area.
