À propos
Steinbach, the "stone stream", stretches along the edge of the Alsace plain, then climbs up to nestle in the verdant Silberthal valley.
First mentioned in 1187 as Cellarium de Steinbach, the village became a parish in 1583. Until 1847, this wine-growing village, also known for its mines (iron, silver, lead and copper), formed a single commune with Cernay, the administrative center of the canton. Steinbach was completely destroyed at the outbreak of the First World War. After being rebuilt, the village was once again hard hit when it was liberated in 1945.
