Cimetière roumain

The Val du Pâtre cemetery is the largest Romanian military cemetery in France. It gathers 678 Romanian prisoners of war, who died from the privations suffered by the Germans during the First World War. There are 553 individual graves, as well as two large mass graves containing the 125 victims, who died of cold during the tragedy of Steinbrunn-le-Haut on the night of 27-28 January 1917.
After the conflict, the commune of Soultzmatt, in a deliberation of 30 August 1919, donated to Romania the land necessary for the construction of the cemetery at Gauchmatt. It was inaugurated in 1924 by King Ferdinand of Romania and Queen Marie. This Romanian necropolis is still today a high place of pilgrimage, where the Romanian rulers come every year to pay their respects.
How to get there: in Soultzmatt, take the direction of Wintzfelden. At the crossroads after the mineral springs, turn left in the direction of Schweighouse and Buhl.
