Abbaye de Murbach

At the foot of the Grand Ballon, the Abbey of Murbach awaits you at the bend in a wooded road. This monastery was one of the most powerful of the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries. Rebuilt after the Thirty Years War, it remains an impressive building.
Admire the Romanesque façade in pink sandstone, a typical stone of the region, and the tympanum of the south portal. Two sculpted lions await you there: one of them sticking his tongue out at visitors. A walk not to be missed!
