📍 Mittelwihr, Haut-Rhin · rue des Eglises, 68630 Mittelwihr
À propos
The primitive church of Saint Brigitte, built in 1046, was replaced in the 15th century by a church surrounded by high surrounding walls delimiting the cemetery. It was dedicated to Protestant worship from 1534, following the introduction of the Reformation by the Dukes of Württemberg. In 1688, the Simultaneum was established in Mittelwihr
Then in a deplorable state, the 15th century church was destroyed in 1866 and replaced by a new Simultaneum church while retaining the 15th century bell-tower-choir →. Reconstruction work on the church led to the discovery of burial slabs and a fragment of a Roman altar.
In December 1944, during the fighting in the Poche de Colmar, the church was almost totally destroyed; only the lower parts of the Gothic bell-tower-choir and the arcades of the nave of the church were spared
On 15 June 1947, a temporary simultaneous church was inaugurated in the barracks village of Mittelwihr.
In 1960, it was decided to build two churches, one for each denomination (Catholic and Protestant), thus putting an end to almost three centuries of Simultaneum: note the difference in size of the Protestant and Catholic churches, built in proportion to the number of parishioners of each denomination at the time
The arcades of the nave of the 1866 church, destroyed in 1944, decorate the square where the churches are located.
