The "Almond Coast", the Mandelberg is a hill that shelters the village of Mittelwihr from the cold north winds. The south-facing, south-south-east facing side of the hill enjoys optimum sunshine and is known as the Grand Cru Mandelberg.
It benefits from a marly-limestone soil on conglomerates on the edge of the Rhine ditch from the Tertiary era. The 22 hectares of the terroir are planted with Gewurtzraminer (40%) and Riesling (30%); supplemented with Tokay Pinot Gris and Muscat. The vines are planted next to the almond trees that have given their name to the Côte.
Cultivated in Gallo-Roman times and then under the Frankish lords, the Mandelberg, like the Mittelwihr vineyards, became the medieval property of the abbeys of Saint-Dié, Ebersmunster, Murbach... The Mandelberg is an appellation which appears on the bottles of Alsace since 1925. Of great nobility, the wines made from Mandelberg develop a pronounced fruitiness and exquisite finesse, characteristic of a calcimagnesic soil. Wines with very good ageing potential. (Source : CIVA)
