Built in 1587 by the city to replace the dilapidated slaughterhouse used since the 13th century on the banks of the Ill, the Grande-Boucherie is said to be the work of Hans Schoch, the municipal architect who also designed the Neubau.
Completed in 1588, the U-shaped building was once served by two staircases, which have now disappeared, and by a spiral staircase in the courtyard. The ground floor, open to the street, was used as a butchers' stall on the north side, while the east and west wings were used as vaulted cold storage rooms. The first floor was used for theatrical performances and as an extension during fairs.
An 18th century plan shows buildings around the Grande-Boucherie for other commercial activities.
This utilitarian building, an exceptional witness to the Renaissance, was used for various purposes in the 19th century and has been the home of the Strasbourg Historical Museum since 1919.
