Chemin de croix Marlenberg
À propos
In 1772, the first parish priest of Marlenheim, Ignace Klein, enlarged the building towards the south. On this occasion, the path leading up to the chapel was equipped with a Way of the Cross instead of resting places. The Marlenberg Way of the Cross is one of the most beautiful 18th century Baroque staircases in Alsace. Financed by wealthy winegrowers of the village, it is made up of seven stations composed of an aedicule of pink sandstone, and ends with the Christ on the cross hanging against the façade of the chapel. The seven aediculae are virtually identical. Each one contains a polychrome bas-relief with a commentary inscribed in a medallion. However, there is a difference in the last two aediculae, which do not end with an arch, but with a cartouche surmounted by two cherubs' heads.
