Source Sainte Pétronille

📍 Avolsheim, Bas-Rhin · Rue du Dompeter, 67120 Avolsheim
À propos
The Source Sainte Pétronille, located near the Dompeter in Avolsheim is a true urban legend. It is located on the Alsace wine route about twenty kilometres from Strasbourg

The spring has been known since the Middle Ages for its beneficial effects on fevers and sterility. Since the 18th century, it has been protected by an aedicula: a small building made of Vosges sandstone.

The origin of her name comes from a legend saying that Pétronille, the spiritual daughter of Pierre,
joined Saint Materne and his disciples at a crossroads of the Roman roads leading to Altitona (Mont Ste Odile), to Trestabernae (Saverne), to Germania and to the Gauls and that it is not far from there that a beneficial spring can be found.

He was also attributed the sarcophagus near the church (the source of several healings), but it belongs to a Roman patrician named Terentia Augustula

Popular belief suggests that couples put a sugar in the frame of the small window, if it disappears, the wish will be granted
