Ancienne sous-préfecture de Sedan

Begun in 1865 by architect Reimbeau, completed in 1868 by architect Jean Baptiste Couty, and built in the height of the Napoleon III era, it was designed to face the Macdonald district and focus on Avenue de La Marck. A Louis XIII-inspired building, it combines stone bossing, a Louis XIII cartouche and roof oculus, a Renaissance-style central seated dog, a Louis XIV roof, broken in the style of J.A. Mansard, and a Palladian staircase with central distribution. It was successively the headquarters of the General Staff, the residence of the Prince Imperial, the Emperor Napoleon III and the sub-prefects. Napoleon III spent 3 nights here and left at dawn on September 2, 1870, to sign the surrender of his army at the Château de Bellevue and take himself prisoner.
